Director - Steven Spielberg

Key functions of the roles within the production team
A director is the main person who controls what happens on set and what gets done. For example, the director would tell the actors where to be and also tell the camera operators what to do for that specific scene. As a director, Stephen Spielberg would also add his own twist to the filming, this means if he thinks it looks better recorded through a different lens etc, he would change it to make it more superior. His work is visible in the final product when everything is completed, you would see his own twist in the film.

Equipment used
As a director, you don't use as much equipment as a cinematographer, but you still use a lot of equipment. For example, the director would always need a script available, this allows them to go through the lines as they are recording and see whether it is going correctly, if it could be improved the director could change the script or even change the approach of the scene. The director would also have a monitor and some headphones in order to watch what is being recorded through the cameras perspective. They also have a viewfinder which allows them to view the scene in different size lenses to see whether it would be better suited in a different lens.

Skills needed to carry out each role
When you are a director, you need to have many skills. If you do not have these skills then you wouldn't make a very good director. First of all, you need to be very good at communicating, the director has to organise everyone and also has to lead the production. This means that have to be able to communicate well as they are the main lead. Also as a director, you have to work well in a team. As the director, you will be in charge of most people on the set, this means you have to be organised and be able to be able to work well with others. Directors also need a very creative mind, for example Steven Spielberg always adds his own twists to films to make them more unique, if he didn't have the mind he has, his films wouldn't be as good as they are.

Production sound mixer - Mark Ulano

Key functions of the roles within the production team
A production sound mixer has a big role when it comes to producing a film/TV show. Their job is to create all of the audio for the production, this could vary from the dialogue within the film to the background noises heard in the background of scenes.

Mark Ulano is a very famous sound mixer, he has worked on over 120 films since 1975, therefore he has a lot of experience when it comes to sounds. He is responsible for creating the sounds within a production, however he may add his own twist to a sound to make it unique, as this would make it sound different to a conventional sound. He would also be responsible for the equipment and recording the audio on-set.

Equipment used
As a sound mixer, you have the use of many different pieces of equipment, mainly audio based. One example of the pieces of equipment used is a boom mic, these are used to record audio on-set, meaning that they are recorded along with the footage recording. Doing it this way makes it easier in the edit as the footage and audio are synced up. Another piece of equipment they may use is a sound mixer, this device allows the sound mixer to mix pieces of audio together, it would also allow them to change the volumes of all of the audios which are recorded or being recorded as some may be too loud or too quiet.

Merit task
Both roles that I have stated, Director and Production Sound Mixer both have a big impact on the final product being made. However, they are very different from each other.

The director is responsible for the making of the film. This means they have to organise all of the people and props etc. This is different when compared to the production sound mixer as they are responsible for all of the sounds in the production. Although their responsibilities are different, they must work close together.

The director would work closely with the production sound mixer to make sure all of the sounds are correct and to the highest of standards. The director would also cue the production sound mixer when to play certain audio and also give feedback, if the production needs another audio track the director will most likely tell the production sound mixer.
